So you know that leaving comments will get you noticed. But where do you leave these comments, and what the heck do you say?

What should I say?

Leaving comments IS a great marketing tool, and they CAN get you noticed, help brand you as an expert in your industry, and bring more traffic to your website or blog. But only when they are done correctly.

Things you don't ever want to leave as a comment:

  • Great Post!

  • Very Informative!

  • Nice Site!

  • Good Blog.

  • Come visit my site

These kind of two or three word comments without any "meat" in them are really considered spam by most blog authors, and often times will get deleted or not approved. Don't waste your time or energy doing that. And don't ever leave just spammy comments with a bunch of links back to your page.

The one or two words is a good way to start a comment, but you can't just leave it there. First off, you have to take the time to actually READ the post. Then you can go on to reference part of it saying that you agree or disagree with what the author is saying. Then say why it is you think as you do.

Yes it is okay to disagree with the blog post. But do it in a tactful way.

Often times the blog author will end the post with a question. So that's easy enough. Answer the question, telling them your opinion on the subject. Or, if the blog has provoked more questions in your mind, ask for more information in the comment. The blogger will often take the time to answer your question, and many times other readers will leave an answer for you.

I always try to check the box so that I receive an email of comments left after mine. That way, I can go back and contribute more to the conversation or ask another question... ( I don't do this on huge blogs like problogger - My inbox is filled to the brim when I do that).

The main thing to remember is to leave comments that will actually contribute to the blog. If you take a few minutes and think out what you are going to say, you will notice that you start to get the return traffic and comments back to your blog.

Where should you leave these comments?

As you start to read blogs, you will get a group of favorites that you follow. Try to read them on a regular basis and contribute when you can. No, that isn't on every post on every blog! Only when you feel like you do have something to say.

Don't limit yourself. You can find blog of like interests by:

  • Doing a Google blog search on a keyword phrase that interests you to see what other bloggers are saying about a certain topic.

  • Clicking through from the suggestions made by friends on the social sites like Twitter, Stumble upon, Digg, and Mixx just to name a few.

  • Cruising the comment sections of blogs that you already enjoy to find other commenters you like.

  • Commenting back on visitors to your own blog that leave you a comment.

  • Reading forums and discussion threads in your area of expertise.

You can really find great information, and great blogs anywhere you look. Do a test. Try it for a month and track it. Are you seeing favorable results in the visitors to your site, and the number of comments you are receiving?

I try and schedule time for this 2 - 3 times a week. I find that it really does help. AND - I really enjoy doing it!
